What is a Shut Down?
 Similar to federal government shut down. All work stops except for essential services the court might exempt that the schools request. Those essential services could include:
Payment of property and liability insurance
Utilities (climate control of critical areas, freezers, critical technology powered up)
Personnel to monitor facilities and systems to prevent loss caused by system or mechanical failures Critical decision-makers (superintendent-BOE clerk to facilitate finances)
 Other than those employees above exempted by court order, everyone would be furloughed
 Prohibited from dispersing funds unless specifically allowed by courts for reasons stated above
 Buildings and grounds cannot be used
Possible Impact to Employees, Students, Community:
 Possible shutdown of Federal Programs (Free meals)
 Shutdown of Extended School Services for Special Education Students
o Violation of IEP’s
 No employees nor ability to disperse funds
o Late payments to vendors and contractors
o Inability to disperse payroll to employees
 Financial hardship on employees
 Violation of federal wage and hour laws regarding timely payment of wages earned
o Inability to purchase emergency repair materials if needed
 Potential loss of classified employees to other jobs if shutdown lasts more than a few days
 Inability to hold board meetings
 No use of facilities by outside groups / Youth Lose Summer Opportunities
o No summer sports camps
o No summer weights
 Delay of summer maintenance projects or inability to do projects this year
 Delay of summer technology processes necessary to complete enrollment for fall
 No one to receive deliveries which may be in transit when shutdown occurs. Delayed arrival of materials needed to start school and potential additional delivery or re-stocking charges for items returned
 Delayed start of school to allow for the following: complete redesign of calendar to allow for completion of maintenance projects, delivery of materials, required teacher training
We do have a plan in place if the shutdown does occur but our greatest hope is that the legislature does not let this happen. We will keep you informed as information becomes available.
